Chinese smartphone maker Vivo today unveiled its latest flagship phone, the iQOO 12, which takes design inspiration from BMW M Motorsport to deliver a premium mobile gaming experience.
Powerful Hardware for Elite Gaming Performance
The iQOO 12 stands out for its cutting-edge hardware, headlined by the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor from Qualcomm. This chip uses the latest 4nm manufacturing process for improved efficiency and is coupled with a custom “Supercomputing Chip Q1” co-processor to further boost gaming frame rates.Together, these provide the ability to play demanding games like Genshin Impact at up to 144 frames per second (FPS), matching the phone’s high 144Hz screen refresh rate. The phone also packs up to 16GB of fast LPDDR5X RAM, 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage, and a large 5,000 mAh battery with 120W fast charging support.According to Torres Zhou, Head of iQOO Overseas Market, “We paired the most powerful processor platform on the market, Snapdragon® 8 Gen 3, with our customized Supercomputing Chip Q1, and an exquisite Porthole exterior design to create a smartphone that exudes exceptional quality.”
Striking Design Language and Display
Visually, the iQOO 12 features BMW M Motorsport branding and design cues like signature tri-color stripes. It has a slim profile at just 8.1mm thick and weighs only 203.7 grams. The phone sports a large 6.78-inch Samsung E6 AMOLED display with 1.5K resolution and 144Hz variable refresh rate enabled by LTPO technology. This allows the screen to scale between 1Hz and 144Hz depending on the content, preserving battery life. HDR10+ support and 100% DCI-P3 wide color gamut coverage provide excellent picture quality.
Advanced Camera System Inspired by Astronomical Imaging
On the rear is an unusual “Porthole” triple camera array, taking inspiration from telescopes and microscopes. The main 50MP sensor captures highly detailed images, especially in low light. This is complemented by a periscope lens with 3x optical/10x hybrid zoom and a 50MP ultrawide camera.Together, these allow up to 100x digital zoom as well as 8K 30fps and 4K 60fps video recording. Unique shooting modes leverage AI and multi-frame processing to achieve noise reduction and detail enhancement similar to advanced scientific imaging techniques.
Availability and Pricing
The iQOO 12 will first launch in Malaysia and Thailand on December 6th, followed shortly by releases in Indonesia, India, and other Asian markets. Pricing is still to be confirmed but leaks suggest it will retail around £540 in India for the 12GB/256GB model.Given the flagship specs and gaming focus, the iQOO 12 looks to compete with offerings from ASUS, Xiaomi, and other brands catering to mobile gamers. Its distinctive design and BMW Motorsport branding help it stand out in this crowded market.
